Since the systems installation in 1993, vandalism has been an issue nearly county-wide. Units in the county have had control cabinets and solar panels damaged repeatedly, either being shot by people with handguns and rifles, having rocks thrown at them, or being forced open with grinders and prybars to steal copper or batteries. By 2004, site vandalism had increased enough in frequency to cost taxpayers between $3,000-5,000 a month for additional repairs.
